Principal Scientist/Associate Director - in vitro Pharmacology/Translational Medicine

Job description

Scismic is supporting the growth of a preclinical stage biotech company developing fibrosis therapeutics.

We are seeking a scientist to join our Pharmacology/Translational Medicine biology team (title commensurate with experience). This position offers the opportunity to be involved in the critical identification, selection and characterization of the company's own therapeutic antibodies and their progression towards the clinic. This scientist will play a key role in designing in vitro pharmacology strategies for target-based and phenotypic projects.  You will also be involved in furthering our understanding of the role of our targets in the pathways and biology that lead to fibrosis. The position will be a combination of hands-on lab-based work and supervisory duties. The successful candidate will be a self-motivated scientist with demonstrated communication and organizational skills who can work collaboratively in a dynamic environment.
 
Role Responsibilities:
 
- Design experiments and research plans that explore the molecular basis for target activity and drug mechanism of action as it relates to fibrosis disease pathology, potency, pharmacology and efficacy
- Conduct and troubleshoot a wide range of biological/molecular/biochemical assays including, but not limited to: cell-based assays in primary human cells, ELISAs, MSD, Luminex, Alpha-LISA, viability assays, RT-PCR, Western blotting, microscopy, co-IPs, cleavage assays, FACS
- Day-to-day oversight and mentoring of junior colleagues
- Ensure reliable availability of cells for planned experiments (primary fibroblasts, cancer cell lines, etc.)
- Document, analyze, interpret and present experimental data in a clear and concise manner
- Contribute to building a positive, team-oriented culture
 
Required Qualifications:
 
- MS/PhD with 5-8 years recent lab-based biotech/pharma industry experience
- Experience managing and mentoring colleagues
- Extensive cell culture experience including primary human cells
- Experience with molecular, cellular and biochemical techniques in 96/384 well format
- Experience with screening (large molecules preferred)
- Ability to plan and execute detailed cell treatment protocols in 96/384-well format
- Able to take direction, work independently and troubleshoot
- Team player; understands and appreciates working towards common goals in small company environment
- Demonstrates attention to detail and record keeping
- Flexibility to adapt work plans to rapidly changing priorities and deadlines
 
Preferred Qualifications:
 
- Background in fibrosis, immunology/inflammation, cytokines, growth factors
- Knowledge/experience working with biotherapeutics
- Experience in high throughput screening such as by phenotype, microscopy, ELISA
- Experience with lab automation
