Lab Operations Manager

Job description

Scismic is supporting the growth of a San Francisco biotech company pioneering commercial applications of the environmental microbiome.

The Lab Operations Team is looking to expand and bring on an additional passionate self-starter who will contribute to managing our lab operation processes. We are seeking an agile team player and fast learner that is ready to jump in and help make a difference. You will be overseeing and performing, as necessary, many lab-related functions ranging from sample receipt, reagent preparation, sample processing, and results delivery. This is an exciting and rare opportunity to become a key player in a cutting edge, fast paced, venture-backed biotech start-up. 

Responsibilities

  • Author, update and/or review IQ, OQ, PQ protocols and reports as well as standard operating procedures
  • Author and/or review validation reports
  • Ensure maintenance and calibration of equipment including controlled temperature environments, analytical equipment, pipettes, etc.
  • Conduct laboratory investigations as required
  • Identify gaps, recommend process improvements, and implement changes
  • Participate in continuous improvement projects and activities
  • Conduct in process manufacturing validations
  • Follow established SOPs to verify performance metrics of methods, materials, reagents, and kits
  • Daily lab activities including sample receipt, sample preparation, qPCR, and sample status tracking in a LIM and QMS systems
  • Ensure supplies and equipment are available to meet schedules
  • Maintain a clean and functional lab space and conduct preventative maintenance as needed
  • Maintain an organized and detailed digital lab notebook and database shared by all in the lab
  • Supervise and mentor a team of lab technicians

Qualifications

  • Minimum of BS in biochemistry, molecular biology, microbiology, biology, or related field
  • 5yr+ experience with aseptic technique and work experience in an industrial setting
  • 2yr+ experience supervising a lab team
  • Ability to work a full-time second shift schedule
  • Experience working in GMP and ISO 9001 environments.
  • Experience with statistical sampling methods and statistical analysis
  • Comfortable working in a high-throughput lab with multichannel pipettors, 96 and 384-well plates, and liquid handling robotics
  • A keen aptitude toward laboratory instrumentation such as noticing unusual behaviors, troubleshooting common problems and working with tech support to keep things moving forward
  • Experience with PCR, Real-time PCR
  • Attention to detail, record keeping, teamwork and clear communication are keys to success
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a larger team
