R&D Scientist

Job description

Scismic is supporting the growth of a biotech company pioneering commercial applications of the environmental microbiome. 

We are seeking an R&D Scientist who will work cross-functionally with other groups across the company to help establish processes and systems in our daily operations.  This person will be responsible for designing experiments to support product development and process development. The R&D Scientist  will run the experiments and oversee and mentor junior lab members to run experiments.  As a process developer, this scientist will be expected to perform root cause analysis when needed and will be leading the effort to build and maintain our company's new QMS system. This position will also be expected to play a significant role in process cost reduction. Our team consists of internationally recognized scientists combine bioinformatic analytics with scalable, high performance computing to deliver products that leverage the microbiome to solve complex business problems like pandemic management and supply chain traceability.
 
Responsibilities
  • Manage project timelines and tasks to enable a smooth transition
  • Write work instructions, DHRs, test plans, validation protocols and reports
  • Establish quality specification for incoming reagent components as well as manufactured reagents
  • Designing experiments, executing, and writing reports
  • Perform DNA and RNA extractions with qPCR analysis according to current protocols
  • Follow GLP (Good Laboratory Practice) and general safety regulations
  • Lead efforts in root cause analysis when needed
  • Help evaluate and implement systems as a part of the overall QMS plan.
  • Continued laboratory and manufacturing process improvements for efficiency and cost effectiveness

This position may have direct reports in the future.
 
Qualifications
  • Requires a Bachelors Degree in Biology, Biochemistry or Chemistry with 3-5+ years of experience. 
  • Medical device development or laboratory test development experience desirable
  • Experience with reagent manufacturing is desirable
  • Experience in establishing quality metrics and specifications
  • Experience in root cause analysis
  • Experience working with molecular diagnostics
  • Experience with molecular assays such RT-PCR 
  • Experience with PCR and qPCR system platforms
  • Experience developing and working with lyophilized reagents is a plus
  • Experience documenting and executing process validation
  • Experience in process development and laboratory process transfer is preferred
  • Proficient Microsoft Project, PowerPoint, Word and Excel
  • Experience using statistical analysis tools such as R or JMP a plus
  • Experience working in and creating documentation for a GMP environment 
  • Must have demonstrated cross-functional team effectiveness, excellent interpersonal and written communication skills
