Scismic is supporting the growth of a biotech company in Brooklyn, NY!

We’re looking for a Senior Scientist, Fermentation to join our founding scientific team of biochemists, bioengineers, biologists, and computational scientists.  This individual will build the company's capacity to perform scale-up fermentation and manufacturing of our solutions. 

We’re in active R&D projects with some of the largest and most innovative CPG food and beverage manufacturers in the world, supplying cultures to one of the top rated restaurants in the world. We’ve raised nearly $30M in funding from top investors. This is a full-time, in-person role at our state-of-the-art HQ in Brooklyn, NY.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead fermentation efforts to optimize growth of diverse natural microbial strains. This company works on a large biobank of natural culture isolates and we do not utilize genetic modification/engineering.
  • Optimize fermentation conditions (benchtop 2-10L) for a wide range of food-grade microbes, achieving and exceeding desired biomass titers (10^9-10^11 CFU/mL) or other molecular targets
  • Optimize simple downstream processing steps (lyophilization, spray drying) to produce high quality end product material
  • Generate internal catalog of material for internal and external validation purposes
  • Own technology transfer of pilot processes to external manufacturing partners to deliver on commercial targets
 

COMPETENCIES & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated ability to scale fermentations from <1L to  ≥10L
  • Ability to operate pilot bioreactors (2-10L, 2+ years of experience in working at this scale) and improve fermentation titers using process optimization and design of experiments methodology
  • Ability to operate downstream processing equipment (lyophilizer and spray dryer) and improve product yields through process optimization and design of experiments methodology
  • Ph.D. in fermentation or a related field; deep domain knowledge of fermentation and metabolism OR 
  • BS/MS Ph.D and 5+ years of industry experience
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and mentor junior scientists; 2+ years preferred
  • Excellent communication skills; ability to define needs and communicate results with multiple internal stakeholders
  • Other attributes that are preferred but not required:
  • Breadth of experience with emphasis on natural microbial strains and optimizing growth of diverse organisms
