Job description
Scismic is supporting the growth of a biotech company pioneering commercial applications of the environmental microbiome.
We are in search of a Scientist, NGS to join our team!
The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in NGS sample preparation and microbiome analysis. Reporting to the Data Science & R+D lead, you will be responsible for the sequencing workstream. You will work closely with the wet lab team to develop novel assays, and help integrate these to our production bioinformatics pipeline when necessary.
Responsibilities
Reporting to the Director of Data Science, Research and Development, responsibilities include:
- Hands-on molecular biology work for the development of NGS sample prep techniques and assay development
- Meet established timelines and produce necessary data to report on the outcomes of R&D sequencing projects
- Collaborate cross-functionally with data science, wet lab, and commercial teams to design, analyze, and interpret NGS experiments and customer pilots
- Perform rigorous analysis of internal and external microbiome data sets
- Troubleshoot complex issues quickly and effectively
Minimum Qualifications
- Ph.D. in molecular biology or a related field, preferably with experience in NGS techniques; or a Master’s degree with 3 years of industry experience
- Experience in using and developing NGS sample prep methods an advantage
- Experience in experimental design, analysis, and interpretation of next generation sequencing microbiome data (amplicon and/or metagenomics)
- Knowledge of a programming languages (Python, SQL, R, etc.) to manipulate NGS data and draw insights, proficient with AWS and version control
- Experience collaborating on cross-functional teams to deliver on project goals and products
- Strong organizational and record-keeping skills with high attention to detail
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively, and to handle several concurrent, fast-paced projects
Preferred Qualifications
- Exceptionally strong communication, data presentation and visualization skills.
- Experience with wet lab biology and/or microbiology; appreciation for the challenges and biases these methods bring to NGS data analysis
- Experience with LIMS in a lab environment
- Experience working in data warehouses environments
- High-quality track record of publications in microbiome or bioinformatics research
